Water Storage Systems

Lighter, More Affordable Solutions

IDE is developing low-cost plastic storage bags that can be used as headers for drip irrigation and sprinkler systems. Currently, farmers pay approximately US$20 for used 200 liter (53 gallon) oil drums in which they are able to store water. IDE has developed a 200 liter (53 gallon) header bag that is expected to retail in Africa for about US$5 and is ready for extensive farmer testing.

In addition, IDE has completed field testing of 5,000–10,000 liter (1,321-2,642 gallon) trench and earth mound-supported plastic water storage bags. These bags allow farmers to store water from various sources, including both harvested rain and piped water. They decrease work, provide water security, and provide a potential income-generating opportunity for small plot farmers.
