SUMMERTIME NEWS
Coming soon to a festival near you...
With sunshine and warm weather finally creeping up on us, IDE will cool Manitobans off at different events and activities planned across the southern prairies. Summer events co-ordinator, Elizabeth Loewen, student in International Development Studies and Sustainable Business at Trent University, is enthusiastic about what this summer has to offer. “We are going to get the children engaged and their parents intrigued about the IDE programme,” she says.
With working treadle pumps and other IDE technology on display, Elizabeth will connect festival-goers with IDE’s work.
Look for IDE at the following festivals:
- Osborne Street Festival (June 30-July 1)
- Exchange District Farmer's Market (July 5 & Aug 9)
- Winnipeg Folk Festival (July 11-13)
- Neepawa Lily Festival (July 18-20)
- Altona Sunflower Festival (July 25-27)
- Portage Potato Festival (Auggust 16)
- Morden Corn & Apple Festival (August 22-24)
LEARNING BEYOND BORDERS
Exchange links Manitoba and Zambia
This summer we are excited to be hosting Mr. Simon Chanda Fikansa, Program Manager of the Integrated AIDS Program in Zambia, for phase II our HIV/AIDS Exchange Program, part of IDE’s Gardens for Better Health Project.
Last October, two workers from Nine Circles Community Health Centre in Winnipeg visited IAP to document the program’s achievements and challenges and provide a Canadian perspective on HIV/AIDS intervention. As part of a return exchange, Mr. Fikansa is coming to Winnipeg to generate awareness about HIV/AIDS at general public meetings and to meet with Winnipeg groups involved in community development, international development and health.
“Mr. Fikansa’s visit is a wonderful opportunity to exchange information on HIV strategies,” says Jamie Matwyshyn, program officer at IDE Canada. “This visit should instill hope and inspire people to learn more about how those living positively are building futures for themselves and their families.”
